A routine drain returns 2.4 L; with a new filter the system takes 2.75 L. The V-twin layout drains cleanly, but the sight glass only tells the truth with the bike vertical on level ground — a side stand lean reads low and invites overfilling. Fill, idle for a minute, wait, then read the glass.
Filter and torque
Suzuki's 16510-03G00 crosses to the HiFlofiltro HF138 per the HiFlo catalogue — the same element the GSX-R line uses, so any parts counter has one. The drain bolt torques to 21 N·m, which is less than most people's calibrated elbow delivers; use the wrench and a new gasket. The exhaust routing passes close to the filter on this engine — on a warm bike it will brand you faster than you can say "crush washer".
Interval reality
The book asks for fresh oil every 4,000 miles or annually. SV650s live hard lives as commuters, first bikes and budget track tools; the interval assumes the first of those. For track duty, halve it. For a bike that sits all winter, change the oil before storage rather than after — combustion acids do their damage while the bike is parked.
Generation check: these numbers are for the third-generation SV650 (2017-on). The curvy first generation and the S/SF second generation differ in capacity and filter routing. The manual for your year is the only spec sheet that outranks the sight glass.
