Honda Grom Oil Change: 0.9 L, the Filter Trap, Intervals

The filter trap
Search results happily sell "Grom oil filters" to owners of bikes that do not have one. The 2014–2021 bikes (JC61 and JC75, four-speed) filter oil with a centrifugal spinner behind the right engine cover plus a strainer screen — there is no spin-on or cartridge element to replace at oil-change time. Only the 2022-on five-speed JC92 gained a proper cartridge: Honda 15412-MGS-D21, crossing to the HiFlofiltro HF117 per the HiFlo catalogue. Know which engine you have before you buy anything.
Less than a liter — treat it accordingly
The change quantity is 0.9 L. A single quart bottle does the whole job with a splash left over, which makes the Grom the cheapest oil change in motorcycling — and also the easiest engine to overfill. The margin between the dipstick marks is small in absolute terms; add slowly and check with the dipstick resting on the threads, not screwed in, per Honda's procedure. Drain bolt torque is 24 N·m with a fresh washer.
10W-30, and why the small print matters
Honda specifies 10W-30 — not the 10W-40 most riders reflexively reach for — with JASO MA and API SG or higher, excluding oils marked Energy or Resource Conserving. Honda's own GN4 10W-30 is the textbook answer and costs accordingly little. The horizontal single runs hot in traffic and shares its oil with the clutch and gearbox across a sump smaller than a kettle: cheap oil changed often beats expensive oil stretched.
Interval honesty for a bike that gets thrashed
The book says 4,000 miles or annually. Groms spend their lives at full throttle by design; the engine is famously tolerant of it, partly because owners who love them change 0.9 L of oil far more often than the book requires. At these quantities the oil costs less than lunch — changing at half the interval is cheap insurance on the only engine you have.
Engine code check: JC61 (2014–2020) and JC75 (2017–2020 US) are the four-speed with no cartridge filter; JC92 (2022-on) is the five-speed with the HF117 cartridge. The frame's engine code, not the model year on the title, decides which parts fit.
