What your manual actually specifies for the street
OEM coolant guidance is more specific than “any green stuff” — and the specificity matters. Honda’s manuals verify “no silicates” explicitly, warning that silicate-based automotive coolant causes “premature wear of water pump seals” (2021–22 CB650R Owner’s Manual). Yamaha and Kawasaki manuals use similar language — Yamaha’s MT-09 manual specifies “ethylene glycol with corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines” (2021 MT-09 Owner’s Manual). The common thread is aluminum protection — modern engines run aluminum heads and cases, and a coolant formulated for old cast-iron car radiators can actively damage the water pump seals and internal passages in a bike’s aluminum cooling system. Buy coolant sold specifically as motorcycle- or aluminum-safe, not whatever’s cheapest at the auto parts store.
Track organizations ban ethylene glycol — and mean it
This is the rule that surprises first-time track-day riders: the coolant your manual specifies for the street is frequently banned outright at the track. Organizations like STT and Fast Line prohibit ethylene glycol on the grounds that a spill on track surface is an oil-slick-level hazard for everyone else riding that day — water, Water Wetter, or a propylene-glycol product like Engine Ice are the accepted alternatives. Professional roadracing goes further still: MotoAmerica’s technical regulations state plainly, “The only liquid engine coolant permitted other than lubricating oil is water” (2025 MotoAmerica Technical Regulations, §2.11.6). Check your specific track day operator’s rules before you show up — don’t assume your street coolant travels with you.
What to actually run instead
Plain distilled water is the simplest MotoAmerica-legal option, though it lacks corrosion inhibitors and offers no freeze protection — fine for a track day, not for storage or winter street use. Water Wetter and similar surfactant additives improve water’s heat-transfer properties without adding glycol, and are accepted at most club-level track days that ban ethylene glycol specifically (rather than all non-water fluids). Propylene-glycol coolants like Engine Ice are the middle ground — they behave like a conventional coolant with corrosion protection, and several organizations that ban ethylene glycol explicitly permit propylene glycol as the lower-hazard alternative. Confirm which category your specific event allows before switching.
Doing a coolant flush yourself
A coolant flush sits in the experience DIY tier, not beginner — not because it’s difficult, but because the drain bolt and any bleed screws are torque-critical, and an overtightened or cross-threaded fastener on an aluminum engine case is an expensive mistake. Work cold, catch the old coolant in a dedicated pan (it’s toxic to pets and needs proper disposal, not a storm drain), and mix concentrate with distilled water — not tap water, whose minerals encourage scale buildup in aluminum passages over time. Torque the drain bolt to spec and bleed any air pockets per your manual’s procedure before you consider the job done.

Can I just run plain water on the street?
You can in an emergency, but not as a long-term choice — plain water has no corrosion inhibitors and boils and freezes at less favorable temperatures than a proper coolant mix. Use it to limp home, then flush to a real silicate-free motorcycle coolant.
Why do track days ban the exact coolant my manual recommends?
