K&N’s own position on the numbers
K&N doesn’t dispute that airflow-oriented filters trade some raw filtration for flow — its own efficiency testing page states its filters generally test between 96% and 99% depending on the specific model and test conditions, and makes a fair technical point: the ISO 5011 protocol allows enough flexibility in dust grade, airflow rate, and test endpoints that results from different labs testing different filter shapes aren’t always directly comparable. That’s a legitimate caveat about cross-lab comparisons — it doesn’t change the underlying trade-off (more flow, somewhat less filtration), but it’s worth reading in K&N’s own words rather than only the version circulated on forums.
Which filter actually suits which use case
The honest, non-tribal answer: paper is the right default for street longevity on a bike that mostly commutes and tours — it’s what the OEM speced, it filters best, and replacement paper filters are cheap. Oiled cotton makes rational sense on a track-focused engine that’s already been refreshed or rebuilt, where the flow gain matters more relative to engine life, and where you can wash and re-oil the filter as part of your maintenance routine instead of buying new every interval. Foam filters are the honest choice for genuinely dusty environments — off-road and adventure riding — where their high dirt-holding capacity and washability matter more than either paper’s peak filtration or cotton’s peak flow. Neither “K&N destroys engines” nor “K&N is totally fine, no trade-off” holds up against the actual test data — both are overstated versions of a real, modest trade-off.

Questions riders ask
Does a K&N (or similar oiled-cotton) filter actually damage engines?
Not in any way the independent test data supports for correctly-installed, properly-oiled filters. Over-oiling a filter, which can foul a mass-airflow sensor on some bikes, is a separate installation mistake, not an inherent flaw in the filter type.
Which filter is better for track days?
